What changes between UKG and Class 1

The move from UKG into Class 1 is one of the most meaningful transitions in a child’s school journey. The day becomes more structured, the academic content steps up, and the classroom feels more like “school” in the traditional sense. At Vidya Siri International School, we treat this transition carefully — children move in with their UKG classmates wherever possible, the daily rhythm is recognisable, and the workload increases gradually.

By the end of Class 1, most children:

• Read short sentences and simple stories independently.
• Write short sentences and basic descriptions.
• Add and subtract single-digit numbers with confidence.
• Recognise the world around them through EVS themes — family, food, places, festivals.
• Hold a longer attention span and complete short structured tasks.

How Primary classes are structured

A typical primary day

• Assembly and circle — start of the day with shared activity.
• Core academic periods — English, Mathematics, EVS, Hindi/Kannada (varies by day).
• Snack break and outdoor — short physical activity, water, rest.
• Specialist period — Computer Basics, Art, Music, or PE depending on the day.
• Reading, project, or library time — independent or group work.
• Closing and pick-up — end-of-day recap.

Subjects we cover in Primary (Class 1 to Class 5)

Assessment and reporting in Primary

From Class 3 onwards, structured assessments are introduced gradually — short, age-appropriate, focused on concepts and application, not rote memorisation. This is CBSE’s preferred “competency-based” model.

• Daily class work and observation — the most important signal for younger primary classes.
• Periodic assessments — concept checks, project work, short tests in upper primary.
• Continuous progress reports — academic, social, emotional, and creative growth.
• Parent-teacher meetings at scheduled points and on request.

What we look for in a successful primary classroom

A good Class 1-5 classroom isn’t measured by test scores alone. We look for:

• Children comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
• Reading happening daily — in groups, alone, aloud.
• Mathematics anchored in real-life examples before symbols.
• Group work and discussion that builds confidence.
• Daily outdoor time and physical movement.
• Honest, regular communication between teacher and parent.
• A teacher who notices each child by name and need.

Future grades — our roadmap

We currently welcome students up to Class 5. Our institutional roadmap includes future academic progression — we don’t claim grades that aren’t currently offered. For the latest position on grades beyond Class 5, our admissions team shares the current status openly.

Where families come from

Our Primary classrooms include children from the residential communities along Sarjapur Road — Mythri Sapphire, Godrej Park Retreat, Confident Leo, Mana Capitol, Sobha Royal Pavilion, Prestige Smart City, Bren Champions Square, and many others. Many children continue from our Early Years section; others join in Class 1 or later from other schools.
